The fossil that was a beehive
How a claimed 550-million-year-old fossil at Bhimbetka was tested — and corrected.
The claim
In 2021 a paper in Gondwana Research reported impressions resembling Dickinsonia — an Ediacaran organism more than 550 million years old — on the ceiling of a rock shelter at Bhimbetka, Madhya Pradesh. It attracted wide attention.
The test
Other researchers returned to the site. In 2023 a re-examination concluded that the features were the remains of a decayed beehive that had fallen from the rock, not a fossil.
A correction is not a failure. It is evidence that the scientific process is working.
Why we feature it
S.C.O.B.E.A. features this case in our investigations archive because it demonstrates each stage of our evidence framework: observation, publication, independent testing and revision.
