Sanajeh indicus — the snake in the nest

A fossil snake preserved coiled around a crushed sauropod egg beside a hatchling — a rare snapshot of predator behaviour.

Dholi Dungri, Gujarat, India · Late Cretaceous

Described in 2010, Sanajeh indicus was found preserved in a sauropod nest: the snake’s skeleton lies coiled around a crushed egg, next to the remains of a hatchling. The authors interpreted this as evidence that the snake fed on hatchling sauropods.

The specimen itself is a documented finding. The behavioural reading — that the snake was preying on hatchlings — is an evidence-supported interpretation that the original paper argues in detail.
